Fever Detectors for Personal Defense?

(There's a shortage of detailed text in this page used in a live presentation)

  • Until the Covid-19 Vaccine is available in 12-18 months, we are all at risk.
  • Early statistics suggest the death rate from Corona is 20 times that of the Flu.
  • 50 Million were quarantined by the Chinese government, some dragged out of their homes.
  • World Health Organization provided test kits to 60 countries, the U.S. declined.
  • 124 hospital workers Quarantined after 1 Corona related case was treated at their Hospital.
  • U.S. needs 10X the existing number of ventilators (700k) and 2X intensive care beds.
Report to CDC: travelers with specific symptoms arriving from China:
Feeling feverish, or has an actual measured temperature of 100.4°F [38° C] or higher)

One means of mass Infection screening is,  Fever Temperature Detection using a Thermal Camera.

Airports have used these systems to screen passengers during several infectious diseases outbreaks.

There may be an entrepreneurial opportunity and perhaps legitimate need for personal fever detectors to identify sick people in one on one encounters.
  • Perhaps a small device one wears.
  • An old fashioned paper card time-clock (that does not require one to touch the box)
  • Or a Ring Doorbell like device that adds intelligent thermal imaging.

In uncooled detectors the temperature differences at the sensor pixels are minute; a 1 °C difference at the scene induces just a 0.03 °C difference at the sensor. The pixel response time is also fairly slow, at the range of tens of milliseconds.

* Best practices for standardized performance testing of infrared thermographs intended for fever screening
CDC paper reports that IR/thermal cameras (IRTs) are less accurae than non-contact IR thermometers (NCITs), but inner canthi (eye duct near nose) temperatures, (more suitable for IRTs) are more reliable than forehead temperatures taken with NCITs.
